Aston Martin DB2 Washboard Side Grilles

New
Vehicle Marque: Aston Martin
Model:
  • DB2 First Sanction
  • DB2

This handed and complete, side grille-set is seen on the DB2 (First Sanction) and some early DB2 models, and fitted on the side of the bonnet skin behind the front wheels.

Commonly known as the "washboard" side grilles, each side comes with a slatted grille part and a trim surround part both made in brass, and fitted via 2BA brass studs through the bodywork. The surround is fitted to the outside of the bonnet skin and the grille vents from within the inside of the bonnet. Although both the near-side and off-side have the same appearance the grille part is actually handed.

At DMark® we have also improved the surround profile which is now solid brass* rather than drawn from thin brass sheet – we think this makes for a better component without any aesthetic differences.

Handmade using DMark® custom tooling, jigs, patterns and aids, and with dimensions sourced from multiple vehicles and parts, this, as far as we know, is the first opportunity for customers to purchase a new and complete DB2 side grille-set.

The DB2 Washboard grille-set by DMark® is finished as polished brass. The surround trim part and each slat is polished ready for chrome.

Customers have the option to receive their new grille-sets in polished brass or chrome.

Be rest assured at DMark® we only work with long-standing, reputable electroplating firms for our work and products. The DB2 Sanction One grille-set is essentially a “bolt-on” component so some clients prefer DMark® to handle the chrome plating. However we do appreciate there are others who will handle the chrome plating themselves and prefer to have their grille-sets in polished brass. Perhaps you’re restoring the whole car and want to have all your chrome plating done at once after a dry-fit? A similar scenario could also mean stud holes in the bodywork may differ to the stud positions of new DMark® parts.

For the most part, all grilles are Made-to-Order or limited to just one or two in stock.

Fixtures and fasteners (nuts and bolts) are supplied.

The brass we use for the slats has a gauge of just over 0.9mm or 20 Standard Wire Gauge (SWG), whereas the more than likely the original material used in the late 1940’s was a little bit thinner at 0.7mm or 22 SWG. Having a little more material, and along with other small improvements like having a solid trim surround, makes the DMark® grille-sets that bit more rigid, structurally sound and easier to fit.

Customers will be aware that, in particular, when vehicles have had extensive repairs; their bodywork, paintwork and the extent of body-filler used can change the panel-shape of the zone mouldings are meant to sit. At DMark® we have taken great care to replicate the most original shape known but occasionally that may differ from the surface geometry of a vehicle.

A complete grille-set consists of four individual sections;

  1. N/S slatted section (side grille one)
  2. N/S surround trim (side grille one)
  3. O/S slatted section (side grille two)
  4. O/S surround trim (side grille two)

Made in brass and includes all fasteners (nuts and washers).

The slatted grille section is mounted on the inside of the bonnet skin with the surround trim on the outside.
